The Promise to Avraham

Reflect on today's discussion regarding God's promise to Avraham. Imagine that you are Sarah, wife of Avraham, and your husband has just related to you that your family will inherit the land of Israel. Writing in the voice of Sarah, answer the following questions:

  • How does this promise make you feel? What emotions are you experiencing?
  • How will your life be changed by it?
  • How will your husband’s life be changed by it?
  • What responsibilities come with this promise?

  1. This promise that my husband ,Avraham, just told me is baffling. A land? Just for our descendants? It's hard to even imagine! It is very shocking. Don't get me wrong, this is absolutely amazing. This guarantees a homeland for my children. It's is an incredible assurance that my children will be safe. However, this does come along with quite a large bit of responsibility. We must take care of the land. I know that I won't be there to see my children enter the land, but I know that when that time comes they must fight hard for it and work to protect it. I believe that Hashem will stay true to his promise and watch out for our descendants and their homeland forever.

  2. My husband Avraham just told me very exciting news. Apparently our G-d has promised him, us, that our descendants will inherit the land that He will give to us. When I first heard I was a little confused because I am a ninety nine year old woman and I have no children. However I am fully confident that Hashem will fulfill his promise and bring our descendants to our land. Another thing that was a little bewildering was the fact that we are already in the land that Hashem has promised us. Other than that it really is quite exhilarating. A whole land for our descendants! I can't imagine what it will be like. We have so much responsibility now. We know that our children will eventually call this land their own, so it is our duty to preserve and insure that it remains for them. They will have to defeat other nations to attain this land, so we will have to try as hard as we can to somehow make that easier for them if we can. Knowing now that my descendants will become so many that they need an entire land will certainly give me a new perspective in life and I'm sure Avraham is feeling the same. Now my actions will be used to make sure that our descendants will be able to receive this land and that Hashem will justify his promise and protect my children.

  3. When Avraham returned from his trip. He said to me the our G-d has told and showed him a land, a great land, that our children, and our children's children will have. It's amazing how generous our G-d is. The land is great and large, it will supply our children for years to come. I'm overwhelmed with joy, the fact that we will someday have a place of our own, a home, it's unbelievable. I now feel as though i can rest easy, now knowing that my family will someday, have a proper home. A place to call theirs. I believe that Avraham is very happy with what G-d has given us, this only makes his, and my love and respect for G-d and all his greatness even larger and more powerful. I only hope my children will be able and willing to fallow what ever laws and rules our great G-d gives to them, and that they will be able to live in the land peacefully and happily for as long as G-d sees fit.

  4. Emotions are ringing inside me. Avraham has just related the news that our G-d has promised a land for Avraham and me, for our children and descendants. I am excited, yet a bit apprehensive to explore the land we will call home. Home. A word I yearn for my children to be able to announce with assurance. My husband and I will have children and numerous descendants! Children! The word rolls excitedly off my tongue. However, we have much responsibility. Avraham and I must treasure the land and eagerly take care of it. This cannot be completed by just one person. We must work together, as a wife and husband should, to ease the journey on the path our children will need to tread on to acquire the land. Our lives will be changed greatly, but I am prepared to confront the challenges we face and overcome them victoriously.
