Zionism II: Ze'ev Jabotinsky and Revisionist Zionism

Read and listen to the Betar anthem at:http://www.saveisrael.com/jabo/jabobetar.htm and post answers to the following questions:

1) What images does the music evoke?
2) What themes emerge from the lyrics?
3)  Based on our discussion in class about Betar, is this anthem appropriate for the youth group? Why or why not?

  1. 1. This music evokes to me that they worked hard to get what they wanted. They believed in working and that was the only way. The people of Betar were not just going to sit back and be lazy; rather they were going to work hard and achieve their goal of building up the kibbutz.
    2. The main theme I see emerging from the song lyrics is hard work.
    3. I think this anthem is an appropriate one for betar because they taught young boys how to fight. It was youth group that was very militaristic. Young boys were trained and trained harshly. They had to shave their heads and wear uniforms. Nothing about this youth group came easily. This anthem is perfect because all it talks about is hard work.

  2. 1. The message that I get from the music was that they had a really strong passion. They recognize that they want something, and they work as hard as they can to achieve it. They see that in order to achieve their goals they must go out and work hard.
    2. Hard work, passion, and motivation all emerge from these lyrics.
    3. The youth group was very military oriented, and they underwent harsh training. If I was a part of this group, I would have found it very hard to push through each day even if I were to like fighting. It's a very hard thing to do, and I think that they would just need some encouragement to work hard to achieve what they want - which is why this song is perfect for Betar.

  3. 1. The images that come to my mind when I heard this song are images of hardworking, passionate people who will fight for what they believe in.
    2. The themes in this song are dedication, the greatness of the Jewish people, how we can do anything if we put out mind and effort into it, and tremendous passion and motivation.
    3. It is very appropriate. There is no better way to inspire a group of people, especially passionate young people, to fight for something than by saying motivational things and having music that pulls at their emotions.

  4. 1) What images does the music evoke?
When I first hear this song, in my mind I see a bunch of people crowded together singing loudly and powerfully. I see them singing about the hardships and something that they are going to do together.
    2) What themes emerge from the lyrics?
I think some of the themes are hard work, devotion, motivation and dedication.

    3) Based on our discussion in class about Betar, is this anthem appropriate for the youth group? Why or why not?
The music is very appropriate for the youth group because the music speaks for itself so beautifully. You are able to tell what the youth group is feeling and how they are reacting to whatever it is. instead of screaming how they feel, they are using music and I think that’s amazing.

  5. 1. This song reminds me of something very militaristic and proper. It makes me think of those people who play instruments during war. It makes me think of people in uniforms.
    2. The recurring theme in the lyrics is the following. There are many things that are working against them. There are many enemies, there are many conditions that are not fit, maybe even they themselves might not see themselves to be fit. However, they will push against that, come out of that, with strength, and fight against the enemy- no matter what.
    3. Wow. This is better than what I would have expected. It has that militaristic tune and the sound to it, and the lyrics are entirely fitting. They are very powerful lyrics, perfectly fit for a very powerful and no-nonsense group. Sounds like a bunch of people who want to fight for freedom!

  6. 1. The music put in my mind an image of rows and columns of soldiers marching straight backed in formation. I think of a rigid structure with one specific, orderly way to do everything.

    2. The lyrics put out messages of hard work, poverty, sacrifice, and being outspoken instead of silent.

    3. Based on what we learned about the youth group in class, I think the anthem fits with the group very well. The group was militant in structure, it had rigid rules and practices that could not be changed, it advocated for hard work even in oppression, it even called for the utmost sacrifice at times, and it always advocated for being outspoken in our opinions on the running of the land instead of being silent. This song expresses all of those things and more of the same theme. I think they fit together perfectly.

  7. 1. This song has a strongly militaristic tone throughout. This song evokes an image of disciplined soldiers in a row following commands from their strongly Zionistic commander.
    2. The theme in the song is a very strong and moving one. There are many obstacles facing the group, such as enemies and harsh conditions. However, the group remains strong and perseveres through any challenges that arise with a strong hand. Nothing can stop them from reaching their final goal.
    3. The lyrics and theme in this song are perfectly fitting. They go along perfectly with what we discussed in class. The youth group consists of hard working, driven kids who are willing to fight for their freedom. The lyrics in the song convey this message perfectly.
